Food farming just like any discipline, needs to adapt to the changing times in order to become sustainable. Why? There are major factors that are currently making it more difficult to farm. The weather is becoming more destructive. Changes in the market demands and manpower in the farms are not the same as 10 years ago. Knowing these issues, it is wise to use modern farming methods and develop new techniques to keep up with the times and remain sustainable.
Every time I go to the Island of Negros, I am looking into a vision where the Negros Island plays a major role in becoming a major food supplier in Central Visayas as well as a knowledgebase of anything worth noting in farming. I often ask myself if my IT skills will be relevant? I do not know, but, what I do know is that, I am willing to learn and my trouble shooting skills and experience in marketing and product management will play a bigger role to make the farm sustainable.
Salvacion Farms is a small family run farm located at the highlands of La Castellana. We recently jump started the production of rice to make sure we have a continuous supply of rice for consumption. We are looking forward to making it self-sustaining and profitable. We understand that it is not easy. We are taking baby steps to make sure that the recent challenges such as Kanlaon's eruption, manpower shifts, and the typhoons damaging the road infrastructure that allows us to transport our produce to nearby cities are properly mitigated and planned for. We cherish the contributions of our farm partners in our first harvest after a long break. it was a successful harvest with over 100 sacks of palay which will give us around 60 to 70 sacks of milled rice for consumption and perhaps some of it to be sold to finance the next planting season.
I am personally learning new farming techniques that are sustainable, modern, and diverse to keep up with the changing times. Our focus today is rice, and we're hoping that nature's bounty will allow us to save enough funds to also grow vegetables for consumption and for commercial sales in the near future. We have an Online Marketplace prepared specifically for this venture and we are very excited to open it to the public very soon.
Follow our adventures as we continue to navigate the intricacies of farming. We hope to share our knowledge with other farmers and we are committed in growing the business because we believe that if we help provide livelihood to the people of La Castellana, we are technically stimulating the local economy.
